Our Work

Violence against women and girls

Violence affects around one in three women and girls worldwide. How can we end it together?

Women’s economic rights

Why are women’s economic rights important – and how do we make sure women can earn a sustainable living?

Women’s and girls’ rights in humanitarian crises

Why is women’s leadership so valuable in emergencies?

International Day of the Girl

We celebrate girls’ achievements and raise awareness of the obstacles that girls face.

Girls' clubs and forums

We support girls’ clubs and forums in schools where girls build their self-confidence and leadership skills.

Female genital mutilation

We often performed as a rite of passage for girls. Find out how this affects adolescent girls.

Sanitary pads changing lives in Malawi

In Malawi, ActionAid is providing training for communities in how to make reusable, low-cost sanitary pads. These simple sanitary pads are changing lives.

Before, girls who couldn’t afford sanitary pads often felt unable to go to school because they were teased by boys if their clothes became stained.

Now, not only are girls able to stay in school, but their others in the community are building long-term businesses by selling their extra pads at the market. This provides women with opportunities to earn an income and support their families.

Sewing reusable sanitary pads

Ruth’s story exemplifies the transformative power of grassroots initiatives in uplifting communities. In Namalusa village, Malawi, where resources are scarce and economic opportunities limited, Ruth’s determination to make a difference shines brightly. Through ActionAid’s support, she and other women received the tools and training needed to produce reusable sanitary pads, a simple yet profoundly impactful solution to a pressing issue. With over 3,000 pads already made and distributed to 600 girls, Ruth’s efforts have not only empowered her financially but have also become a catalyst for positive change in her community.

The heartening feedback from the girls who have received these pads underscores the profound impact of Ruth’s work. By ensuring access to menstrual hygiene products, Ruth is not only enabling girls to attend school with dignity but also fostering their educational success. Her journey from struggling to make ends meet to becoming a beacon of hope and empowerment is a testament to the resilience and potential within every individual, as well as the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change.
